Costs Per Student

Description
The capital costs for Hillsborough County School is calculated using the school construction costs and land costs for elementary, middle and high school. Using the average number of students per school, school costs per students are determined. The data on school construction cost, land cost, and students per school (elementary, middle and high school) were obtained through a meeting with Dr. Jim Hamilton and other school board staff on May 10, 2006. Ancillary cost of $411 is added to the construction cost of the schools. This represents additional costs associated with items such as bus fleet or miscellaneous construction costs. Moreover, school board representatives expressed the hurricane shelter factor, which increases the construction cost for each school type by 50-percent to make them hurricane resistant (for up to Category 3). These buildings would also play the role of hurricane shelter if the need arises.
