Vehicle Miles Traveled

VMT Module

Description

The Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) Projection module uses VMT by place, as taken from the Metropolitan Planning Organization's 2005 transportation model. VMT represents the share of Hillsborough County VMT on roads owned by Hillsborough County and the cities of Plant City, Tampa and Temple Terrace, together with non-Interstate roads owned by the State that are located in the four respective jurisdictions. VMT for 2007 was interpolated from the 2005 and 2025 model estimates.

In the module shown above, the initial VMT represents the VMT at the beginning of the simulation period for each jurisdiction. The annual VMT By place variable is computed under the Total Road Capital Costs module (see the roads capital costs section of this manual). The annual change is then added to the initial VMT to obtain the VMT variable, which stores the projected VMT for each year of the simulation. The cumulative change in VMT variable stores the cumulative change in VMT for each of the jurisdiction for the entire simulation period.

The table in the figure above shows the following variables:

  • Initial VMT

  • Annual Change (in VMT)

  • VMT (for the last year of the simulation)

  • Cumulative Change in VMT (for the entire simulation period)

The graph below shows the cumulative VMT change for the entire simulation period (2007 to 2027). The value is shown in the top-right corner of the graph. The jurisdiction for this graph can be selected from the drop-down menu on the top-left side of the graph.

Equations and Variables Used

  • Initial VMT (for each jurisdiction)

  • Annual VMT by Place = Annual Vehicle Miles Traveled x Percent VMT on Jurisdiction Roads

  • VMT (for each jurisdiction at the end of a simulation year)

  • Cumulative Change in VMT = VMT - Initial VMT
